Shepherds Program Notre Dame of West Haven is one of five schools in Connecticut that receives scholarship support from Shepherds Inc., a nonprofit organization that pays a student's four-year tuition and pairs that student with a mentor from freshman through senior year.
Acceptance in to the program is not guaranteed, as more candidates meet the criteria than there are scholarships available. If Notre Dame considers the candidate eligible for the Shepherd's Program, it offers the student a Shepherd's Program application. After completing it, the next step is for the student and his parent/guardian to interview with Shepherds personnel.
Candidates must meet four criteria for consideration:
- Take and pass the Notre Dame entrance exam and pay the necessary fees to become a registered student.
- Have financial need, such that without aid, he could not attend Notre Dame. (Each candidate must complete all financial aid information and forms required by the school.)
- Show academic potential
- Likely benefit from a mentor in his life

Students who complete the application process and gain acceptance to Notre Dame are recommended to the program.
Selection is based on achievement and enthusiasm, family support, and financial need. Students are asked to maintain a B average, give to the community through service projects, and attend Hillhouse Scholars Program events each fall and spring.
