ND Football...Tradition Rich Program

Friday nights in the fall are special and Notre Dame football is a big reason why.  One of the more respected programs in the state of Connecticut, Notre Dame football has been a mainstay at the school since the doors opened in 1950. A five-time state champion, the early teams helped school morale starting a tradition of success. With playoff appearances as recently as 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2016, that tradition of strong, hard-nosed football teams that former players, alumni, students, and fans of ND Nation can be proud of is still true this day. Consistently turning out all-league, all-State, and players who move on to the collegiate level, Notre Dame football has one of the best traditions among ND teams. Every season starts with great expectations and winds its way to the traditional Thanksgiving Day Green Bowl game with Hamden, that is the highlight of the fall sports season. Notre Dame competes in the ultra-competitive Southern Connecticut Conference, a league comprised of 23 schools in the greater-New Haven area that has won over 400 state championships since the league’s inception in 1994.

Head Coach Joe DeCaprio

Joe DeCaprio was announced as Notre Dame’s head football coach on December 11, 2016. He replaces long-time head coach Tom Marcucci ‘66, who retired following the 2016 season. It was the late 1990’s and Coach DeCaprio was leading a normal life, working for ATT/Comcast, about to get married and start a family. But, deep inside he knew something was missing. Teaching, coaching, and football were what was missing. So, DeCaprio made a life-altering, sleep-deprived decision to return to school and get his college degree, with the hopes of getting into teaching and coaching. He worked an overnight job, went to school during the day, and became a volunteer coach with the Notre Dame football program in 2002 under his brother and former Notre Dame head coach John DeCaprio, which led to his current position. DeCaprio, who teaches social studies and business courses at Notre Dame, followed his volunteer stint by being hired as quarterback coach for two seasons in 2004 and 2005. He was then promoted to offensive coordinator, a position he has held for nine of the last 11 seasons. DeCaprio, who helped mold former quarterbacks Sean Goldrich and Christian Lupoli into scholarship players at the University of New Hampshire, helped guide Notre Dame’s offensive attack to playoff berths in five of the last eight seasons. The 2017 football season will be his first as head coach.
