ND Swim Team

A perennial contender in the pool in the competitive Southern Connecticut Conference, the ND swim program has had its share of success on the state level dating back to the early years of the program. A five-time state champion (1966, 1967, 2002, 2003, 2004), the current swim program remains a competitive program statewide. In the last five years, the swim team has finished 3rd in the SCC four times, while also finishing as the runner-up squad in Class M in 2014-15 and in third place in the 2015-16 Class M Meet. They have qualified for the CIAC State Open Meet eight of the previous 10 years. Notre Dame competes in the ultra competitive Southern Connecticut Conference, a league comprised of 23 schools in the greater-New Haven area that has won over 400 state championships since the league’s inception in 1994.

Head Coach Paul Katz (2016-17 first year)

Paul Katz is in his first full year at the helm of the ND swim program. He took over on an interim basis in the 2015-16 season helping lead ND to third place finishes in both the SCC and Class M Championship Meets. Katz, who received a Master’s Degree from Cal-Berkeley in Civil Engineering and a M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, comes to Notre Dame with a great swim pedigree both as a coach and participant. Most recently, he helped guide Lauralton Hall to the 2014 and 2015 Class M titles as Associate Head Coach, helping to produce 11 all-state swimmers over a three-year period. Following a successful swimming career, Katz coached at the collegiate level, at nearby Yale University from 1976-1978 and then as head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at LaSalle University from 1978-1982. He helped produce six NCAA Division 1 qualifiers between 1977 and 1982 and coached LaSalle to three consecutive Division 1 Men’s East Coast Conference Championship titles and to the runner-up title to Harvard University in the 1982 Eastern Intercollegiate Seaboard Championships. A high school all-American from Seward Park HS in New York City, he went on to attend and swim for Yale, where he earned Division I All-American honors in individual and relay events. While a student-athlete, Katz set (and held for 8 years) the Yale record in the 200-yard butterfly, swam the butterfly leg of Yale’s 400 medley relay team that captured the US National Championship, and played a key role helping the Bulldogs win two Eastern Intercollegiate Seaboard Championships.
