Class of 2022 Summer Assignments
All assignments are based on the book Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi. All students should complete the English, Science and Math assignments. Only students registered for an Art course should complete the Art assignment. Only students registered for Choir should complete the Choir assignment.
Five journal entries about the book Persepolis must be completed over the summer and are due on the first day of class in a composition book. Journal entries should be based on quotes/pictures from the book that speak to the student and provoke a response. Students will write a 5 paragraph essay on the topic below. They will have a few days in class to work on the paper. Essays will be submitted to Turnitin.com. Access rubric through following link. Rubric may be accessed through this link.
Topic: What factors were central in the decision by Marji’s family for her to leave Iran? Using evidence from specific panels in the graphic novel, write a well-developed essay that explains Marji’s departure. Do not simply summarize the book.
English for International Students Level 1: As a pre-writing activity, students will complete this graphic organizer. Students will write a 5 paragraph essay on the topic below. The graphic organizer will be completed over the summer and passed in o the first day of class. Students will write the essay during the first week of school.
Topic: Define the qualities of good and bad parenting. In a well-developed essay, discuss the ways in which the actions of Ebi Satrapi, Taji Satrapi, and the Grandmother could be considered good parenting, bad parenting, or both.
English for International Students Level 2: As a pre-writing activity to be completed over the summer and passed in the first day of class, students will rate the change in Marji’s feelings towards specific family members using this graphic organizer. Students will provide support for each rating. Students will write a 5 paragraph essay on the topic below. Students will write the essay during the first week of school.
Topic: Examine Marji’s relationship with her family: her parents, her uncles, her cousins and her friends. Discuss Marji’s feelings about each member of her family, her feelings about her family as a whole,and how her opinion of her family changes from the beginning of the book to the end.

Only students registered for an Art course should complete the Art assignment.
• Select a current event that interests you.
• In a one page comparison essay, describe your chosen issue as well as Marjane’s situation in detail.
• Bring your complete essay to class which will be graded via the attached rubric.
You will be using your current event and your perspective to create your own graphic novel when you return to school in August. Link to detailed assignment instructions and grading rubric.
Only students registered for Choir should complete the Choir assignment.
• Pick a character from the novel with which you identify and come up with 5-10 words that describe the character.
We will use those descriptors when you return in the fall to pick songs that represent your Persepolis character in the novel.
