ND Cross Country....Running to Great Heights

The Notre Dame cross country program has been an integral part of the storied history of our athletic program dating back to successful teams in the 1960’s. Always well conditioned, they run every day after school to compete at a top level on some of the best cross-country facilities in Connecticut. A consistent qualifier in state championship meets, the program is one of the state’s most respected under long-time coaches Br. James Branigan, CSC and Bill Parkinson. They combined to coach the ND cross country team from the mid-1970’s through 2016. Notre Dame cross country has had 11 runners achieve all-state status while capturing three league titles: the 1977 District League title, 1986 All Catholic Conference title, and the 2002 SCC Southern Connecticut Conference title. Notre Dame competes in the ultra-competitive Southern Connecticut Conference, a league comprised of 23 schools in the greater-New Haven area that has won over 400 state championships since the league’s inception in 1994.

Head Coach Rich Andreozzi (Second Season; 4-5; Class L Meet Qualifier in 2016-17)

Rich Andreozzi, who replaced long-time cross country coach Bill Parkinson, coached his first cross country team at Notre Dame in the fall of 2016. He has previous coaching experience manning the cross country and track positions at Polson Middle School in Madison. An avid runner, he is a member of the New Haven Road Runners Club.

Andreozzi, who was a standout soccer and baseball player at Hamden HS in the late 1970’s,  is currently employed by the North Branford Public Schools following a 33-year career with the State of Connecticut in their Department of Children and Families.

“Rich is a very nice addition to our coaching staff,” said Athletic Director Tom Marcucci ‘66. “He has a lot of energy, enjoys running, and has experience coaching on the cross-country level.”

Andreozzi takes over for long-time cross country coach Bill Parkinson, who was at the helm for 36 years. His 2002 squad captured the SCC Championship and he consistently fielded teams who qualified for the CIAC Class L Championship Meet.

In his long tenure at Notre Dame, Parkinson also guided the schools’ outdoor track program to great heights, including three class state championships (1991, 1992, and 1997) and two state open championships (1991 and 2010) not to mention six conference championships (4 ACC and 2 SCC) and four SCC Quinnipiac Division titles.
