ND Hockey Program...Skating, Shooting, And Saving Leads To Success

One of the storied programs in Connecticut high school hockey, Notre Dame has reached the championship game a total of 17 times, including being a 7-time state champion since the program was founded in the late 1970’s. Sending countless players on to the next level, Notre Dame’s hockey tradition is second to none within Connecticut hockey circles. Notre Dame’s most recent hockey title came in 2012, while falling in the championship game in 2013. Playing its home games at the Bennett Rink, Notre Dame traditionally plays a tough schedule including the best teams in Connecticut as well as teams from Rhode Island on an annual basis. Tim Belcher ‘93 became the fifth head coach in school history taking over in the 2013-14 season. Notre Dame competes in the ultra-competitive Southern Connecticut Conference, a league comprised of 23 schools in the greater-New Haven area that has won over 400 state championships since the league’s inception in 1994.

Head Coach Tim Belcher ‘93 (Fifth season; 51-34-6; 2014 and 2016 CIAC Tournament Semifinalist; 2015 SCC Tournament Champions)

Tim Belcher ‘93 became the first hockey alumnus to serve as Notre Dame’s head hockey coach when he was hired in June of 2013 to succeed Bill Gerosa. Belcher, who captained the 1992-93 team to a state title with a 3-2 win over Trinity Catholic, spent 13 years as head coach at nearby Lyman Hall. In that time, he has led the Trojans to the quarterfinal round of the CIAC Division II six times, including four appearances in the semifinals. His 2001 team won the SCC Division II hockey championship.

Belcher, who holds the position of Assistant Director of Admissions at Southern Connecticut State University, was a two-sport standout at Notre Dame, also captaining the Notre Dame baseball team as a senior, earning all-State honors. He went on to a standout baseball career at Quinnipiac University, where as a senior he was a First Team Division II All-American and the Division II New England Collegiate baseball player of the year. Inducted into the Quinnipiac University Athletic Hall of Fame in February of 2009, Belcher still holds the schools’ single-season record for home runs and RBI’s from his senior year. He also holds the NCAA all-division record for grand slams in a season.
