Guercia Memorial Fund

Remembering Coach Jim Guercia

“Mr. Guercia was not my coach, but he was my gym teacher. He had an incredible amount of patience and encouragement for those of us who were not naturally athletic. I always appreciated him for being as understanding as he was."
- Eric Linblom, '01

On June 22, 2020, Coach Jim Guercia passed away at Connecticut Hospice in Branford.  Jim spent his entire 45-year career as teacher, coach, and mentor at Notre Dame beginning in 1968 until his retirement in 2013.  Coach Guercia was a 1992 Knight of Honor and an inductee at the first Notre Dame Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.

To commemorate Coach Guercia’s love for Notre Dame and decades of commitment to ND students, we will place a brass memorial plaque on the left stone pillar at the entrance to Marcucci Field later this fall. We have established a James Guercia Memorial Fund to support this initiative. Contributions will benefit Notre Dame’s Physical Education program through which Jim mentored countless Notre Dame alumni.

Rest in Peace, Coach Jim Guercia.  You are missed.
