Colton Varholak '19, Sophomore at Stonehill College, biked 107.4 miles, and nearly 10 hours round trip, from his home in Orange for "Closer to Free" on Saturday 9/12. He stopped for a pitstop and lunch at the home of Lucy and Michael Abbott at the halfway mark in Old Saybrook. He raised $2875 to go directly to research and patient care at Smilow Cancer hospital!
Colton's "My Story"
I'm beyond excited to be participating in the 10th annual Closer to Free Ride on September 12th. I've signed up to ride 100 miles (from home!) to support patient care and research at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center. 100% of the funds I raise goes directly to changing and saving lives so the more I raise, the more people we can help together.
I am participating in the Closer to Free Ride in honor of my mother who has been battling breast cancer for over 7 years. For the past 5 years, she has been continuing her fight against metastatic breast cancer. I have seen first hand the toll that a battle against cancer can have on not only the individual in the fight, but the family and friends around them. My mom has had such an amazing impact on so many people that I want to return the favor and contribute to the very institution that has helped her so much over the past several years. I will be riding as a part of Team ONCtourage in honor of the doctors, nurses, patient navigators, and administrators who have all taken care of my mom and helped my sisters and I throughout this fight. These same heroes have helped my grandfather in his battle with esophageal cancer and have been a part of our lives for a very long time. In addition to my mom and grandfather, they have also helped my mom's best friend, my dad's best friend, and one of our closest family friends and my confirmation sponsor. My goal is to raise as much money as possible to give back and show appreciation to the heroes that have given my family and so many others help in the toughest times.
Thank you so much in advance for helping us bring the world Closer to Free of cancer and thank you for your generous donation!
