Notre Dame Receives Authorization as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme World School

For Immediate Release

Notre Dame High School Becomes an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme World School

President Robert Curis is pleased to announce that Notre Dame High School in West Haven has been authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme World School. Notre Dame is the only independent Catholic high school in Connecticut to offer the IB curriculum.

Curis says, “We are excited to introduce the IB Diploma Programme to our school community. The IB Diploma Programme furthers our commitment to provide a 21st-Century curriculum for today’s students. It expands Notre Dame’s robust academic programs which include Advanced Placement (AP) and the Early College Experience (ECE) with UCONN, as well as our signature programs in Technology/Engineering/Design, Sports Medicine, Experiential Learning (NDXL) and more.”

Mr. Ruben Valencia, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Mrs. Kimberly Butz, Notre Dame’s IB Coordinator, led the extensive three-year application process. Sixteen faculty members participated in formal IB training and are prepared to offer the IB courses in the fall.

Valencia, who implemented the first private IB Diploma Programme in Florida and led the Florida League of IB Schools, says “the program’s unique course offerings with high academic standards, a focus on critical thinking and writing across disciplines, and an emphasis on giving back to the community complements Notre Dame’s Holy Cross mission of educating minds and hearts.” Notre Dame is proud of the 25 “pioneers” from the Class of ‘23 who will take their first IB courses in the fall of 2021.

According to the IB website, “Diploma Programme graduates complete college faster than their peers, feel more prepared for college-level coursework involving research, and are better able to cope with demanding workloads and time-management challenges.” Valencia adds, “skills developed in the program are a major part of lifelong success. IB graduates are ready to thrive in the increasingly competitive global marketplace, as entrepreneurs, public servants, and professionals.

Notre Dame High School of West Haven is an all-boys Catholic, college preparatory school sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross. Notre Dame High School inspires academic excellence, nurtures personal growth, and fosters integrity and compassion in young men of diverse talents, backgrounds, and beliefs through its Catholic, Holy Cross tradition.
