Giving Back with Time, Talent, and Treasure

John Ciarleglio, III ’69

John Ciarleglio, III ’69 knows the meaning of the mantra Giving of Time, Talent, and Treasure.  His commitment to his high school alma mater has been invaluable as he guided our Notre Dame Loyalty and Endowment Fund through the ups and downs of economic cycles.  For Notre Dame’s Administration, John’s insights and guidance far surpass the consistently positive return on investment we have realized on our Endowment portfolio under his guidance.

After receiving his MBA, magna cum laude, from the University of Connecticut, John began his career as an Investment Analyst and Portfolio Manager at General Motors and Polaroid, respectively.  In 1986, he struck out with a partner and founded Longfellow Investment Management Co., LLC in Boston, MA.  John became a member of the Notre Dame Loyalty and Endowment Fund, Inc. Board of Directors in 2002 and assumed the position of Chair of the Board in 2006. He recently joined the Notre Dame High School Board of Directors.

In 2006, John and his family established the John Ciarleglio, III ’69 Family Scholarship Fund.  In May 2019, he informed Notre Dame that the school would be a beneficiary of a portion of his IRA.  In doing so, John designated that his legacy gift to the Notre Dame Loyalty and Endowment Fund, Inc., will be for the benefit of the school and student financial aid.

John explained the impact of his Notre Dame Education: “Several important aspects of ND affected me the most – my understanding of God and his message of giving back unselfishly and my striving to be the best while being honorable in this pursuit.  The Brothers of Holy Cross also taught me to ask questions, to take risks, and to have faith!  The diversity within the ND student body and our daily interactions showed me that we all have worth. While my undergraduate and graduate institutions did provide knowledge specific to my career, Notre Dame is wholly responsible for my character – who I am today.”

John’s contributions of time, talent, and treasure go beyond his commitment to Notre Dame.  In 2003, he became a USPTA certified tennis pro and initially taught at the Longfellow Tennis Club. In 2006, he became the first head coach for men’s tennis at Regis College, Weston, MA.  In 2010, he took on duties for the women’s program as well.   After ten years as head coach, John retired but is still at Regis as a volunteer coach.  He has also served on the board of the Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA and as President of the Bristol S-Gauge Railroaders, Inc. for 11 years.

John and his wife Patricia reside in Ipswich, MA. They have two sons, John and Thomas.
