School Counseling

Notre Dame’s School and College Counseling Department helps students acquire the academic, social, and personal skills needed to live successfully in today’s multicultural world. To ensure continuity and stability, students generally see the same counselor all four years, and parents may meet with counselors throughout the year.

Our staff includes an administrator and three full-time school counselors, all of whom assist students, parents, and faculty in identifying and resolving academic and personal issues. Together we work to create an effective learning environment for each student.

Advising

School Counselors meet regularly with each student and his family to determine which courses he will take based on his record and goals. As part of the guidance process, students complete a Needs Assessment that helps Advisors make recommendations as needed for individual counseling, group work, or occasional encouragement.

Counselors and Teacher Advisory (TA) faculty regularly collaborate to review student academic progress and to help students achieve their potential.

“ND prepares students for life in and out of the classroom, instilling a strong sense of values, self preparedness and interpersonal skills.”

–John DeCaprio, Assistant Vice President for Student Success & Social Studies Faculty

Rita Benney Academic Center

The Rita Benney Academic Center is designed to help students become confident, independent learners with a solid foundation for further success. For this reason, the services we offer are open to all students. In addition to individual and group tutoring by academic area, the Center offers workshops that focus on test preparation, time management, organization, note-taking, and study techniques. Students with documented learning differences may receive the recommended services they need during regularly scheduled sessions that meet during the student’s study periods.

To encourage and enable parental support, the Academic Center offers a parent workshop for first-year students that discusses organizational skills, note taking, study strategies and test preparation techniques. This Strategies for Learning program is student-led under the supervision of the Director.
