Class of 2028 - Frequently Asked Questions

When will Notre Dame begin enrolling young women?

We will begin enrolling women in the Fall of 2025.

Will you only enroll women in the freshman class that year?

We will enroll women as freshmen in the Class of 2029. We will also admit women as transfer students into the Class of 2028.

Will the population be 50% male, 50% female right away?

Since we will be adding women by grade, we expect it will take several years before the population of men and women is balanced.

What will change about Notre Dame?

This is an opportunity for us to expand our mission by offering a Notre Dame education to both male and female students. The core values that define a Notre Dame education - developing in young people the Character to Lead, Compassion to Serve, and Confidence to Excel - will not change.

Will Notre Dame’s class sizes increase as a result of this decision?

We are committed to ensuring that our class sizes and student-to-faculty ratios continue at a level that will allow us to provide the best academic experience possible for our students. We will add faculty/class sections as necessary to ensure the best experience possible.

How will athletics be impacted by the decision to admit women?

Notre Dame has a long history of athletic excellence, most recently demonstrated in state championships in basketball and ice hockey. Our commitment to that will not change, and we anticipate that our women’s teams will enjoy the same success.

What women’s sports will be added?

We are in the process of discussing our plans for adding women’s teams, and will announce those when we have made final decisions. It is likely that women’s teams will be added incrementally, as the population of women increases each year.

Will Notre Dame still be known as the “Green Knights”?

Absolutely. All our athletic teams will be known as the Green Knights.

Do you have the facilities to accommodate women?

We have identified the need for women’s restrooms and women’s locker rooms, and those will be completed before women enroll in Fall, 2025.

What will the dress code be for women?

We are in the process of determining the dress code for women. It will be announced by the beginning of the 2024-2025 academic year, a year before we begin enrolling women.
