NAVIGATING THE TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL

HOW WE ENSURE A SMOOTH TRANSITION TO NOTRE DAME

Freshman School Counseling

Starting high school is exciting, but can sometimes be overwhelming.  At Notre Dame, we have resources in place to ensure a smooth transition for all students.  All first-year students are assigned a dedicated freshman school counselor who is an expert at the transition issues that freshman face. Ms. Lauer encourages her student's to experience all that a Notre Dame High School education has to offer.

The Minds and Hearts Advisory Program

Our Minds and Hearts Advisory Program partners faculty, staff, student leaders, and peer counselors to ensure that all freshmen receive expert guidance as they navigate their first year at ND. Through the Minds and Hearts Advisory Program, students are provided a faculty mentor who works with them over the course of their four years at Notre Dame.

The Rita Benny Academic Center

One of the hallmarks of a Notre Dame education is the fact that we know our students well, and that is reflected in our teaching. When Notre Dame students do need some extra support, we have the needed resources in place. The Academic Center offers individual and group tutoring by academic area, workshops on test preparation, time management, organization, and study techniques.

A CONGRATULATORY NOTE FROM Members of the ND Community

“Notre Dame is a place where academics, sports, faith, and community come together. Whether it’s making pizza for people in need at the Ronald McDonald House or helping out at animal shelters, I’ve learned what it means to build character and give back. Coming to ND, I didn’t just find a school—I found an extended family that I chose for myself. That’s what ND STRONG means to me, and I hope every prospective student gets to experience it.”

Chael Baijnauth, Class of 2028

“My experience at ND has been incredible. Every one of my teachers has been supportive, helpful, and consistently willing to go above and beyond.  As the first female student to enroll at ND, I was initially worried about fitting in, but I truly feel like I belong here and have found my place. I have felt welcomed by everyone—from freshmen to seniors. I still remember asking a senior for help finding a classroom on my first day, and he guided me without hesitation. The Peer Counselors were so kind during the first week of school, and they helped me feel comfortable right away. From the beginning, ND has felt like my school, and everything about my experience so far has been amazing.”

Allianna Wilson, Class of 2028

“Notre Dame has always been more than a school—it’s a family. I graduated in 1989, I’ve taught here for over three decades, and my own son walked these halls as a student. Through all those years, one truth has never changed: our greatest strength is the relationships we build. The academics evolve with the times, but the way our faculty cares for, mentors, and walks alongside our students—inside and outside the classroom—is what truly sets Notre Dame apart. As Blessed Basil Moreau reminded us, ‘How we educate the mind will change with the times; how we cultivate the heart is and will remain timeless.’ And at Notre Dame, the heart has always come first.”

Adam Laput ’89, P’20, Social Studies Faculty
