Ray Tellier Jr. ’69
A two-sport standout at Notre Dame, Ray Tellier Jr. earned two-time All-District and All-State quarterback honors while leading the Green Knights to a 9-1 record in both 1967 and 1968. He was also an All-District catcher, was named Notre Dame Athlete of the Year in 1969, and earned a football scholarship to the University of Connecticut.
After starting at quarterback for UConn and winning two Yankee Conference Championships, Ray built an outstanding coaching career. Following assistant coaching stops at UConn, Dartmouth, Wabash, Boston University, and Brown, he became head coach at the University of Rochester, leading the program to its best record in school history and its only NCAA Division III playoff appearance while earning AFCA Eastern Region Coach of the Year honors.
Ray later spent 14 seasons as head coach at Columbia University, rebuilding the program and earning AFCA National Coach of the Year after leading the Lions to their best season in over 50 years. He finished his career as Columbia’s Associate Athletics Director, overseeing more than a dozen varsity sports before retiring in 2014.
