The amity club of new haven
Native New Haveners tend to identify with their particular neighborhood rather than the City. This is especially true of the Wooster Street-Wooster Square neighborhood, the home of New Haven's proud Italian community. There, you will find Saint Michael's Church, the oldest Italian parish in Connecticut. The Apostles of the Sacred Heart arrived in 1907 to minister to the burgeoning immigrant community. And, of course, Wooster Street is the place to go for New Haven apizza!
It would be a challenge for Notre Dame to focus on a single individual of Italian heritage who epitomizes our indebtedness to the Italian community of Greater New Haven. However, we can do so by inducting the Amity Club of New Haven as Knights of Honor.
The Amity Club of New Haven was founded in 1936 when second and third-generation Italian-Americans were well established in the professional life of the City. The Club's founders desired to foster and promote charitable, intellectual, and civic pursuits among its members. Their goal was to encourage an appreciation of Italian history and the Italian-American legacy in America and to support charitable giving through the Amity Charitable Trust Fund. The Club's name represents the countries they love, AM for America and ITY for Italy.
In recognizing the Amity Club of New Haven, Notre Dame is expressing its gratitude to the myriad of Notre Dame Alumni who have supported the Club's initiatives with their time, talent, and treasure. The Amity Club Trust Scholarship Program is a strong point of contact between Notre Dame and the Club. Several Notre Dame families have established scholarship funds in the Trust, and many Notre Dame seniors heading to college have been the beneficiaries of their largesse.
Amity Club President Paul DiMauro commented on the Club’s induction as Knights of Honor: “The Amity Club of New Haven is deeply grateful to Notre Dame High School for recognizing our philanthropic work and inducting the Club as Knights of Honor. This prestigious recognition further validates the Club's dedication to making a positive impact in the community.”
