Notre Dame's fall athletic programs delivered memorable performances across the board, highlighted by the addition of girls' volleyball in our inaugural coeducational season and a historic SCC Championship in boys soccer, along with strong showings in cross country and crew.

Boys Soccer: SCC Champions

The Green Knights completed a remarkable season with a 19-3-2 record and captured the SCC Championship title in dramatic fashion. After falling behind 0-1 to Fairfield Prep in the conference final, the team rallied to tie it 1-1 at halftime before surging to a decisive 3-1 victory. The championship win was particularly sweet as it avenged an earlier loss to the same Prep team that had handed Notre Dame its first defeat of the season.

Throughout the year, the squad demonstrated exceptional resilience in pressure situations, including two hard-fought ties against Xavier (0-0 and 2-2, with the equalizer coming in the final seven seconds) and a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against East Hartford in the playoffs. The team also finished first in their division and advanced to the CIAC State Quarterfinals.

Offensively, the Green Knights were explosive, recording 79 goals and 52 assists over 24 matches. Christian Habiniak '25 earned SCC First Team and All-State honors while leading the attack with 18 goals and 5 assists. Milton Jimenez '25, also an SCC First Team selection, set a new program record with 24 assists to go along with 7 goals. Andrew Leibowitz '26 contributed 17 goals and 5 assists, while Josh Joiner '25 added 10 goals and 4 assists. Brandon Fajardo '25 provided spark off the bench with 6 goals in just 8 matches and earned SCC Finals MVP honors.

Defensively, the team was anchored by goalkeeper Ned Mathews-Ramos '26, whose 78 saves, 16 shutouts, and 0.83 goals-against average provided the foundation for the championship run. Daniel Glenney '25 (SCC Second Team) joined Brody Burns '25 and Luke Boffa '25 to form a formidable back line.

Football

The football team went 5-5, an impressive finish after starting the season 0-4. The team's top wins came on the road against North Haven and Hamden in the Green Bowl. Jake Zullo '26, Matt Sommer '26, Joe Capasso '26, and Luke Miklos '26 all earned Levi Jackson All-Area. Tayvion Simmons '26 earned 2nd team All-SCC and Luke Miklos '26 earned 1st Team All-SCC. 

Cross Country

The boys cross country team finished with an 8-5 record and placed an impressive fourth out of 24 teams at the Connecticut River Valley Invite. Dan Carone '28 led the way throughout the season, earning Second Team All-SCC honors after placing 15th in the conference championship. He finished 11th at the CT River Valley Invite with a time of 16:43, and along with Marco Blakslee '26, secured a 1-2 finish on senior day in a victory over Shelton.

The team showed excellent depth with contributions from Mateo Cammarata '26 and Chris DePalma '27 in the 4-5 positions, while underclassmen including Brendan Schneph '29, Roko Kelly '29, Isiah Gombar '28, Liam Paul '28, John Scarlett '28, Sayri Vera '29, and Jack Conklin '29 filled out the roster with promising performances.

In the inaugural season for girls cross country, Alison Maloney '29 was a standout, winning three JV invites and finishing 20th in a varsity race of 85 runners. Her time of 21:44 ranked her 38th fastest freshman in Connecticut. Yamilet Ortiz '29 and Mia Rojas '29 also showed tremendous growth throughout the season.

Crew

The crew team capped off a successful regatta season with a top-50 finish at the prestigious Head of the Charles, earning the boat a coveted qualifying spot for next year's race.

Making History:
Notre Dame's Inaugural Girls Volleyball Season

The fall of 2024 brought a historic milestone to Notre Dame High School as our first female students didn't just join the classroom—they took to the court. Girls volleyball launched with 11 dedicated athletes, many of whom had never played organized volleyball before, ready to build something entirely new.

Despite facing a challenging schedule filled with legacy programs, these trailblazers achieved what will forever be remembered in Green Knight history: Notre Dame's first win in girls athletics. On September 10th, the team defeated Newtown 3-1, marking a breakthrough moment for our expanding athletic tradition.

As the season progressed and skills sharpened, the victories continued. The team notched impressive wins over opponents who had defeated them earlier in the season—a testament to their rapid growth and determination. Sofia Grasso orchestrated the offense from the setter position, while Mary Sowitcky and Jadyn Forget powered the attack from the outside. Madison Pinder, Allianna Wilson, and Mariam Sheriff anchored the middle, with Lorelei Schumann and Julianna Gomez rotating through the opposite position. Kayla Boyle, Rosalyn Chambasis-Vallejo, and Genesis Rodriguez provided essential defensive support as liberos and defensive specialists.

As we look ahead to fall 2025, excitement builds around the possibility of achieving another first: Notre Dame's inaugural varsity victory in girls athletics. These young women have already made their mark on our 80-year legacy—and they're just getting started.
